Track Your Investments Without Linking Your Brokerage

Steady Wealth · February 24, 2026

Your brokerage credentials are too valuable to share

Your brokerage account is probably your most sensitive financial account. It holds your investments, your retirement savings, maybe years of compounding growth. Giving a third-party app login access to that account is a risk most people don't think about carefully enough.

Steady Wealth lets you analyze your investment portfolio without connecting to your brokerage at all. Upload a screenshot of your holdings, and you get a full breakdown: sector allocation, position weights, and an AI-generated analysis of your portfolio.

How Portfolio Analysis works

The Investment Analysis tool is a standalone feature. It's not connected to your net worth tracking (for that, add your investment accounts on the Accounts page). Think of it as a private lens on your portfolio.

Here's the process:

  1. Take a screenshot of your brokerage holdings page showing your positions
  2. Upload it on the Investments page
  3. Review the extracted holdings. Each position shows the ticker, name, and value
  4. Run the analysis. You get a sector breakdown donut chart and an AI-written narrative about your portfolio

You can upload multiple screenshots if your holdings span different accounts or pages. The system merges everything into one consolidated view.

Sector breakdown at a glance

The sector chart shows you how your money is distributed across market sectors: Technology, Healthcare, Financials, Consumer, Energy, and so on.

This matters because diversification isn't just about owning a lot of different stocks. It's about spreading risk across different parts of the economy. If 60% of your portfolio is in tech stocks, you're making a concentrated bet whether you meant to or not.

The visual makes it obvious. One look at the donut chart and you know if you're balanced or tilted.

Broad market ETFs like SPY, VOO, and VTI are classified as "Other" since they already contain diversified holdings across multiple sectors.

AI narrative: what a second opinion looks like

After the sector breakdown, you can run an AI analysis that generates a written narrative about your portfolio. It looks at your largest positions first and works through the key themes:

  • How concentrated or diversified you are
  • Which sectors are overweight or underweight
  • What risks stand out based on your current allocation
  • Potential areas to consider rebalancing

This isn't financial advice, but a structured second opinion based on your actual holdings. Think of it like having a knowledgeable friend look over your portfolio and tell you what they notice.

Save snapshots to track over time

Pro users can save portfolio snapshots. Each snapshot captures your holdings and sector breakdown at a point in time. Over months and years, you build a history of how your portfolio has evolved.

Date pills at the top let you navigate between snapshots, so you can compare your current allocation to where you were six months ago or a year ago. It's a simple way to see whether your investment decisions are moving you toward or away from your target allocation.

Why this matters for privacy

Most portfolio tracking tools require you to link your brokerage through Plaid or a similar service. That means sharing your brokerage credentials with at least two additional companies (the aggregator and the app). I wrote about why Steady Wealth doesn't ask for your bank login, and the same principle applies to your brokerage.

With Steady Wealth, your analysis comes from a screenshot. The image is processed, the holdings are extracted, and the screenshot is discarded. No credentials exchanged. No ongoing connection. No third party sitting between you and your brokerage.

Your brokerage login stays with your brokerage, and that's how it should be.

You shouldn't have to choose between understanding your investments and protecting your brokerage credentials.

Getting started

Head to the Investments page from your dashboard sidebar. Upload a screenshot of your holdings and you'll have a sector breakdown in about 30 seconds. No setup required, no accounts to link, no credentials to share. If you want these investments reflected in your net worth, add them as accounts on the Accounts page, since the whole update process takes about five minutes.
